Google drops Firefox, Bundles Chrome in pack

googlepackbetaGoogle makes available a bundle of applications within a single download package containing a number of both Google and non-Google programs considered to be essential for end users. They currently include a selection of up to 12 applications, including software such as; Google Toolbar, Spyware Doctor, Picasa, Adobe Reader, and more. Users are able to select and unselect the various options from the site to customise their download.

Since Saturday, Google has changed the default option for the web browser from Mozilla Firefox to Google’s Chrome browser. Firefox has not been removed as an available option, but it is now unselected by default and end users will need to consciously tick it to add it to the pack.

In an email statement to PC World New Zealand, Mozilla Chief executive John Lilly stated:

“It’s great to see them get to 1.0 and will mean more choices for users,” … “Firefox 3 use has grown quickly over the last few months and we’re excited to release 3.1 early next year … competition is clearly creating better browsers than ever.”

The Google pack also includes a Google Updater which automatically finds available updates for the various applications it includes.
